(Un)usual
October 1, 2007 at 3:42 pm | In Baby Drew | Leave a CommentWe have had Drew around long enough now to recognize that he requires an unusual amount of schedule combined with variety everyday. And that variety is determined by his mood, and we as the parents, get to try and figure out the mystery of what he might want today. We have come to realize we have a high maintenance child. Food must always come on schedule – if not, the Irish temper emerges. But everything else is always in flux. Today, he might want to play with his mirror. Tomorrow, he will absolutely hate his mirror and want to play airplane with Daddy instead. At this moment, he likes the swing, but earlier today, he was vehemently opposed to it. Tim and I have (finally) come to laugh about this. When talking with family or friends we often find ourselves saying, “Well, usually Drew will…” And then we stop and laugh – there is no usual with this child.
We have, however, found one thing that he does seem to really like – his bouncy seat. Every morning while I eat my breakfast, I’ll sit him in it. As soon as he gets in, he starts to get excited and breathe faster and flail his arms all around and smile. The seat has a bar that you can lower that has three toys attached – a circular rattle and two mutant looking orange and green giraffes. He grins and jabs his little fists out toward them. He doesn’t have the hand-eye coordination to hit them every time, but he sure likes trying. Yesterday, he managed to knock the entire bar down with his little jabs. Afterward, he sat quite proudly with a “What’s next – bring it on!” look on his face.
Drew also likes to sit in this bouncy seat while we eat dinner. It has provided Tim and I with a way to eat without juggling a baby – a scenario I will never take for granted again. Yes, Tim and I are very thankful for this bouncy seat. It is one thing that we can count on in the every-changing life of little Drew…at least, usually.
